Crash Cuts Gas To Customers And Students

A driver looses control in Huntingdon County and slams into some natural gas pumping equipment.

The crash in Mount Union left more than 100 customers without gasa community wide evacuation went into affect, and a number of shelters were opened.

Police say 47-year-old Kevin Harris, was drunk when he slammed into a UGI regulator station.  Company workers were on scene most of Friday replacing the natural gas pipe line.  Because the accident involved a four inch pipeline, about 120 customers in all were left without gas.
The situation prompted a voluntary evacuation in the neighborhood surrounding the accident. While most of the people contacted by the emergency workers during the overnight didn't want to leave their homes public shelters were set up in a fire all and a former elementary school building.

 Among the building that lost gas service were the Mount Union Junior/ Senior High School and that lead to an early dismissal for 750 students on Friday. For the people who were evacuated over night, most things were back to normal by late morning. Utility workers said they expected to use the rest of Friday rebuilding their gas line and restoring service to the customers who lost gas service.
