“We’re out here trying to motivate them up for the last minute to get out to the polls,”
Volunteers with both the Republican and Democratic Parties explained that door knocking can help to gather and spread important voter information.
“We went house to house with a list of likely voters and we basically asked them, if they had already voted, what their plan was to vote. And if they hadn’t, just making sure that they knew how their vote could be counted,”
Some volunteers said that many of them were bussed into the Johnstown area from Washington D.C. for voter canvassing just a day before the election.
“Honestly, I didn’t go out here to convince people, I think the most useful thing you can do is say, hey, if you want to vote, actually you can’t do mail-in now. You have to go in person and just making sure everybody who wants to vote gets the opportunity to do it in the way that’s going to get counted.”
With very little time before the election, volunteers said that canvassing is more important than ever.
“We have a lot of people in the past who have not utilized their right to vote. We need everybody to get out and vote.”
